'Awit ng Papuri kay Maria'

The Three Kings Parish staged a fund-raising musical concert entitled "Awit ng Papuri kay Maria" last October 29.

It was a triple challenge -- making a bunch of amateurs sing unfamiliar songs, as tribute to the Virgin Mary, and  before an assortment of VIPs that included Cabanatuan Bishop Sofronio Bancud, Nueva Ecija Vice Gov. Edward Thomas Joson and Gapan City Mayor Ernesto Natividad.

But they pulled it off, judging from the enthusiastic reponse of the audience that packed the National Shrine of the Divina Pastora, which that night was transformed into a concert hall complete with high-tech sound and lighting systems.

The show featured the original compositions of Rev. Fr. William S. Villaviza, resident priest of the parish and director for sacred music of the Diocese of Cabanatuan.

Easily the most applauded  number was the trio of parish priest Rev. Fr. Onet Mangahas, Fr. Villaviza and former parish priest Rev. Fr. Elmer Mangalinao.

Other suprising performances during the nearly two-hour concert were those by the "Golden Girls", a bunch of sexagenarians who proved that there's life after 60; Three Kings Youth Choir; Angels Choir; the men of the Knights of Columbus, in full regalia, who appropriately sang a tune with a martial touch; El Shaddai; CFC; and the Familia Choir from Cabanatuan City.

A number of priests led by Rev. Fr. Michael Veneracion attended the affair which also served as an impromptu homecoming for former Three Kings Parish priests -- Monsignor Felipe Dayao, Jr., Rev. Fr. Rene Vigilia and Rev. Fr. Mangalinao -- and former assistant priests -- Rev. Fr. Edwin Beley and Rev. Fr. Carlos Padilla.

When told after the concert that the one song performed by the trio of priests left the audience hanging, Fr. Mangahas said, "That was intentional."

A hint of another concert in the making, perhaps?
